Submitted by Tim Rolfing, WSHS Class of 1984

“At our 40th reunion in 2024, (Superintendent) Brad Berzinski gave our class a tour of Winona Senior High School. It was a fantastic experience. While the outside of the building looked just as we remembered it, the inside had been transformed. More than once, I found myself wondering, ‘Where did my locker go?’

During our conversations with Brad, we talked about both the opportunities and challenges facing the school district. One idea that really stood out was the power of alumni networks and social media to help support the schools. When I saw the Winhawk Challenge in an email, my first thought was to share it with the Class of 1984 Facebook page. After talking with a few classmates, it became clear that every graduating class could help spread the word. Then we decided to make it even more fun by challenging the Class of 1983 to a friendly donation competition. I reached out to the Class of 1983 organizers, and they enthusiastically accepted the challenge.

Today, I serve as the Chief Information Officer for Satellite Industries and Satellite Shelters in Plymouth, Minnesota. I’ve been fortunate to build a rewarding career in technology and business leadership. But that journey really began in 1980 (8th grade) when I took a BASIC programming class with Mr. Richard Kolter in the Winona Junior High Math Wing. Technology has changed dramatically since then, but that class sparked a lifelong interest in technology and helped set me on the path to the career I enjoy today.”
